New policeman in charge of Dales

A NEW officer has been put in charge of policing the Derbyshire Dales and High Peak areas, after working his way up the ranks over more than two decades.

Chief superintendent Gary Knighton started his new role as divisional commander last week, replacing chief superintendent Peter Lewis who has retired from Derbyshire Constabulary after 30 years service.

Mr Knighton has 23 years’ service with the force, beginning his career at the age of 20 as a patrol constable in Clay Cross.

His most recent position was head of operations in C Division, which covered Chesterfield, Bolsover, North East Derbyshire and Amber Valley.

Mr Knighton said he was looking forward to his new role and added: “I am delighted to have been appointed as the divisional commander for B Division.

“The division is a low crime area and I will be working hard together with my team, partners and our communities to keep people safe, tackle crime and to provide a high-quality service which meets the needs and concerns of our communities.”
