New poster campaign targets rise in rural domestic abuse

The Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership campaign has been launched in the run up to Christmas, with posters bearing the words “On the 12th day of Christmas, my true love sent to me”, “Silent Night” and “Ding Dong” distributed across the two districts.

The posters are also urging residents not to be “on the receiving end” of domestic abuse, this Christmas and making victims aware that expert help is available.

Partnership domestic abuse coordinator Wendy Hardy, said: “With many people struggling financially this year, tension is already building.

“Then, as people spend more time together, the pressure becomes too much - and can be the flash point for abuse.   But domestic abuse is never acceptable and there is help out there if you need it.”

The Yorkshire Post revealed earlier this year that the number of reported incidents in Hambleton and Richmondshire – home to Catterick Garrison, Europe’s largest army base – had overshot predicted levels by more than a third, with growing numbers of frustrated ex-servicemen who are unable to find employment fuelling the rise.

Experts said large social events where drinking takes place, such as agricultural shows, are also contributing factors in the spike.

The dramatic rise in expected numbers of cases has in part been hailed as a success by outreach workers, with victims historically reluctant to come forward due to the tight-knit nature of rural communities across both Hambleton and Richmondshire.
