New road will ‘boost the local economy’

MOTORISTS will get long-term gain for any short-term pain as work starts on £10m worth of improvements on one of the busiest roads in the East Riding.

Work on the A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme will begin tomorrow and will take around a year to complete.

The scheme will create a new dual carriageway just under a mile long, between the Ketch roundabout at Willerby and the Castle Hill roundabout at Cottingham and entail improvements to the four roundabouts along the route, as well as some new stretches of cycle path.

East Riding Council is seeking to keep disruption to a minimum by imposing one lane of traffic in each direction, no traffic signals at peak periods and any excavation across the road taking place at night.

Principal engineer Malcolm Smith said: “We are lucky in the respect that we have a lot of space in there and we can move the traffic around to accommodate the building scheme.”

East Riding council leader Coun Steve Parnaby said: “The council is delighted to announce that this scheme is now under way which, as well as improving the area’s transport infrastructure, will safeguard jobs within the construction industry.

“When completed, this scheme will make a huge difference for both commuters and the travelling public in the East Riding and will also provide a timely boost to the local economy.”
