New school ‘set to boost investment in village’

PLANS for a new school in one of Yorkshire’s most deprived communities have taken a step forward.

Barnsley Council has appointed construction firm Robertson to design and build a new primary school for Goldthorpe on land previously cleared of terraced housing around Main Street.

Work will start in summer 2015 with an anticipated completion in summer 2016.

The single-storey building will provide space for 310 pupils and nursery spaces. The school will also be designed to accommodate future expansion to a 420 pupils.

Councillor Roy Miller, a cabinet spokesperson, said: “The new school is expected to be a catalyst for the further regeneration of Goldthorpe by providing a landmark new building which will no doubt provide greater confidence for private developers to invest further in the town.”

The existing school at the junction of Doncaster and High Street will be demolished and re-developed for retail use.

A public consultation event will be held at the school on Wednesday, December 3, 3.30pm to 6pm. People will have the opportunity to view the proposals including the 3D model of the new school and give their feedback on the proposed layout and design.
