New station will provide base for motorway and local police

PLANS for a new police station which will serve several communities and act as a base for patrols on a busy stretch of Yorkshire motorway were unveiled by senior officers yesterday.

Contractors have now started work on the new building at Chase Park, Redhouse Interchange, north of Doncaster, which will become the new police station for the Adwick area.

South Yorkshire Police said the station would accommodate around 50 officers from the community policing teams which cover the north of Doncaster, as well as police from the force’s roads policing group.

Neighbourhood teams which cover the communities of Askern, Adwick and Bentley will all be based at the station, which replaces an old building in nearby Woodlands.

A force spokesman said: “The current police station on Windmill Balk Lane in Woodlands is an old building with high running costs.

“It is in a dilapidated condition and renovation costs would be very expensive. The site will be sold once the new building is complete.”

Chief Supt Bob Sanderson, who is district commander for Doncaster and currently acting assistant chief constable, visited the site yesterday to see work begin.
