New study pinpoints flood dangers

ALMOST 9,000 homes are at risk from flooding in Rotherham, according to a risk assessment which has been carried out by emergency planners under new Government legislation.

All local authorities have been ordered to examine the sources of flood risk, such as surface water run-off, groundwater and ordinary watercourses.

Officers collected information on both historic and potential floods and after analysis used it to identify areas where the risk of flooding is thought to be locally significant.

The exercise revealed that over 8,500 residential properties in Rotherham were at risk from surface water flooding with a further 300 properties at risk of flooding from rivers which would “overtop” banks in heavy rain.

A council spokesman said: “As a result of the exercise, a total of 106 areas have been identified for prioritisation in subsequent flood risk management planning by the authority.

“Over the next six years it will have to prepare flood risk maps and plans, asset data register and local flood risk strategies.
