New Trans-Pennine routes open for walkers, cyclists and horse riders

A LONG-awaited extension of the Trans-Pennine trail route, from Barnsley to Kirklees, will open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders this summer.

The project will see two routes emerge from Kirkburton, south of Huddersfield, and join the trail at Penistone.

One of these routes will be on road and travel from Kirkburton through Stocksmoor, Shepley, Haddingley and Royd Moor to join the trail at Millhouse Green. This route will be available for walkers and cyclists.

Meanwhile, a slightly longer off-road route will go from Kirkburton to Shelley, Shepley, Cumberworth Common, Denby Dale, Upper Denby, Ingbirchworth, Royd Moor to join the trail at Thurlstone. This route will be available for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Trans-Pennine Trail officer Mandy Loach said: “This is a great chance for the trail to build on the fantastic network we already have.

“We hope the local communities will benefit from the increased number of visitors to both destinations from far and wide.

“Both routes have such a variety of scenery to offer, from beautiful rolling countryside to the memories of our industrial past of the mills and railway viaducts.”

Volunteer rangers are wanted for both routes. Call 01226 772574.
