New viewing hide at nature reserve

A NEW viewing hide is being installed at the RSPB’s Blacktoft Sands nature reserve, thanks to £32,000 funding from Biffaward, a multi-million pound fund aimed at helping communities and environmental projects.

Part of the funding – £10,000 – is being spent resurfacing paths between the hides at the Humber reserve, near Goole.

The new hide replaces the smallest hide on the reserve and includes disabled access via a new ramp.

Visitor officer Mike Andrews said: “This new hide will allow our visitors to have a more comfortable time viewing the action on one of our favourite lagoons for both birds and visitors.

“From here you can watch our avocets bringing up young in the spring and in the autumn look out for wading birds as they pop in for a visit as they migrate to Africa for the winter.”

The improvements have been timed to keep disturbance to the birds at a minimum.

Mr Andrews said: “While work is being carried on our new marshland hide we will manage our other lagoons to provide shallow water and exposed mud providing conditions suitable for their feeding needs.”
