New visitor centre hailed

A SPECIAL first birthday is being celebrated today in York as a new record for visitor numbers is marked.

Visit York’s information centre opened its doors in Museum Street a year ago, replacing a similar facility in the De Grey rooms.

Almost 400,000 people from the UK and throughout the world have used the new centre since it opened, compared with 240,000 a year at the De Grey office.

The 60 per cent increase has delighted tourism chiefs.

York attracts over seven million visitors a year, who spend over £443m. This has created nearly 23,000 jobs in the local economy, according to Visit York.
