New Yorkers get taxicab taste of 'old' Yorkshire

PASSENGERS in the back of New York's famous yellow cabs are being treated to a video snapshot of Yorkshire's splendour in an adventurous attempt to attract visitors from across the pond.

The county's tourism agency, Welcome to Yorkshire, says visits to its website from America have risen by 118 per cent since it began a new marketing campaign in New York last week.

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity, said: "It's estimated there were 3.5 million visits from North America to the UK in 2009. We want to ensure more Americans think about coming to Yorkshire.

"Our aim is to get home the message that Yorkshire is an amazing place to visit."

The promotional films, which focus on the region's heritage, are being played in nearly 10,000 taxis in New York.
