Night of classic entertainment as stately home hosts Prom

ROUSING classics rang out at Castle Howard this weekend as the stately home near York hosted its Proms Spectacular.

Billed as one of the most popular outdoor classical events in the UK, the event on Saturday, featured the English National Orchestra performing works by many of the world’s best loved composers.

Other musicians taking to the stage to perform a programme of popular classics, traditional favourites and hits from film scores included tenor Wynne Evans and soprano Janet Mooney.

The evening began with a pre-concert performance by the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers and a parachute drop over the arena by the RAF Falcons.

Crowds were also wowed by a fireworks display that brought the evening of song to a spectacular close.

Music continued at the 18th century estate last night, with an outdoor concert from X Factor stars Olly Murs and Alexandra Burke.

Producer Rob McIntosh said he was thrilled to be “bringing Olly and Alexandra to Castle Howard” and added: “They’re two of the best and certainly most popular acts to emerge on to the pop scene.”

Next Tuesday, August 23, Castle Howard will host a craft and local produce market with more than 20 stalls selling a range of goods.
