Nightingale marks 40 years at the BBC

Radio 1's longest-serving DJ Annie Nightingale, who celebrated 40 years at the station this week, said she did not expect to "last more than a year" when she first joined.

BBC bosses held a series of concerts last night to celebrate the career of the station’s First Lady.

But she told BBC magazine Ariel said: “They were all blokes, it was so sexist. It was all locker-room humour and I never really felt I fitted in.”

She added: “I didn’t think I’d last more than a year.”
