Nine-year-old boy pulled from sea

A NINE-year-old was pulled from the water at Bridlington by a lifeboat crew after being blown out to sea in a dinghy.

The youngster's sister managed to swim ashore but her brother was left struggling when he tried to follow suit. The all-weather lifeboat Marine Engineer was just touching the beach when it was alerted to the incident and immediately turned round to help.

The boy was holding onto the dinghy, but kept going under and crewman Christopher Bromton jumped in and grabbed the boy.

He said: "They didn't even have oars and the boy was trying to paddle with his hands and when he started to sink under the water, believe me it was close."

The boy was returned to his waiting grandfather. The family was visiting from Derbyshire.

Second Coxswain Stuart Tibbett said: "We need the public to be aware how dangerous inflatables can be."
