No action on teacher in sex allegations

POLICE have revealed no further action is to be taken against a teacher at a failing Yorkshire school who was arrested over alleged sexual offences.

Humberside Police confirmed Robert Harrison, a teacher at Endeavour High School in Hull, had now been released from police bail after an investigation which ran for a year.

Mr Harrison was arrested in January last year but neither the police nor Hull Council would reveal the nature of the alleged offences and whether they involved a child, either at the school or outside.

He has declined to comment. It is understood Mr Harrison still remains suspended from Endeavour while internal inquiries continue.

In a statement, Judith Harwood, Hull City Council’s Head of Learning, Participation and Skills, said: “We have a duty to look into any concerns regarding a person who works with children and we work with schools to follow the relevant procedures where necessary. This is a separate process from police investigations. It is not appropriate for us to comment on any individual case.”

Mr Harrison, a former associate headteacher at Endeavour, was head of humanities.

Endeavour was seen as a flagship development 10 years ago after being built at a cost of 15m. But after a series of problems it is now understood a formal proposal to close the school will be submitted to the council’s cabinet later this month.

The Beverley Road school remains in special measures, for the second time, and education chiefs have previously admitted it had effectively been built in the wrong place. It has been operating at around half its 1,200-pupil capacity.

The school went into special measures in March 2004 before coming off the blacklist in December 2005. It was plunged back into special measures in 2009 and last September headteacher Chris Straker abruptly quit before the start of the new term.
