No hiding place for police picture

AN ANTIQUE painting worth more than £1,000 has been discovered in the attic of Harrogate’s historic Police Treatment Centre.

Staff uncovered the rare still life by 19th century Austrian artist Stephanie von Trauttweiller, seen above with John Pranczke a member of the Estates team, in the attic of the home among a collection of other pictures.

The centre was built in 1903 by Victorian philanthropist Catherine Gurney and now treats around 4,000 police officers every year.

The painting is to be put up for auction soon to help pay for new equipment needed for the switch to digital TV transmissions and its chief executive Michael Baxter said: “This is an exciting find for us and helps us with our fundraising for the centre.”
