SIR Stuart Rose was the star turn at the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards with the colourful chairman of Marks & Spencer receiving a special award for his trailblazing career in the British retail industry.

The presentation crowned an evening of celebration as Yorkshire's best businesses were honoured for their remarkable feats of job creation and revenue growth despite consistently challenging economic conditions.

Chancellor George Osborne found time during his preparations for next week's Comprehensive Spending Review to deliver the keynote speech for the awards, which are now in their fifth year.

Jon Culshaw, master of ceremonies, entertained the audience of leading industrialists with spot-on impressions.

The Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards were established in 2006 to highlight the dazzling range of entrepreneurs who have decided to make Yorkshire their home.

Firms of all sizes who have placed the county on the global business map are honoured.

The awards, which were held at the Queens Hotel in Leeds, attracted entries from across the region.

Firms vying for top honours included long-established manufacturing firms and small businesses with big expansion plans.
