No polling day rest for tired candidates

POLLING day used to be a comfortable end to the campaign for candidates – the weeks of pounding the pavements and knocking on doors were at an end and they could enjoy a leisurely tour of the constituency during the vote.

But the modern campaigns are very different, most candidates will retreat inside their headquarters to get on a phone or a computer and contact as many of their supporters as possible to get them to vote.

Most Yorkshire MPs said they were not superstitious – but a couple were continuing successful traditions from the past.

Robert Goodwill, who hopes to retain his Scarborough and Whitby seat, took his family and some of his election team to the same Chinese restaurant they visited in 2005.

Greg Mulholland, fighting Leeds North West, wore the same tie he wore to his last election victory and on his wedding day.
