No question as college picked for challenge

FOR the third time in six years students from Whitby Community College are among the winners of the Schools Question Time Challenge.

The national contest, which was devised by Question Time presenter David Dimbleby, challenges schools to organise an event based on the BBC TV programme.

Whitby Community College was one of four national winners selected by the judges.

Each team had to submit a written bid and film a short Question Time event to convince the judging team from both the BBC and the Institute of Citizenship, that they were worthy of a place in the final stage. That involved taking part in a full Question Time event. College students prepared by attending a recording of Question Time where student Emily Ward asked a question. They also toured BBC studios and had a seminar with a producer.

For the next stage, two students chosen to represent the team will attend a workshop with the Question Time production team next month.

Students Dan Hartas and Naomi Russell will meet the teams from the other three winning schools to discuss the format for the official Question Time with Mr Dimbleby.

They will watch the recording of the first Question Time after the General Election and two months later be involved in the BBC 1 broadcast of the programme on Thursday, July 8.
