No room with a view as town’s seaside views sacrificed for graffiti-clad wall

IT COULD quite easily be the worst view in Britain.

Anyone who takes the weight of their feet on this bench in Scarborough, which lies under the resort’s St Nicolas Cliff lift, is confronted with an unsightly graffiti-clad concrete wall.

While the seat was put in place to give passers-by the chance to take a rest, residents are baffled as to why it was not more suitably sited to take advantage of the famous panoramas across either of the seaside town’s famous north or south bays. In fact, only feet away there is a leafy clearing that affords a far more pleasant view.

Just around the corner lies a parade of other benches, which give a view overlooking the South Bay.

Nick Thornton, 36, who has lived in Scarborough all of his life, said: “What a horrible place to put a bench. It must be the worst view in Britain.

“I would never sit on the bench, all you can sit is graffiti and a dark hollow, it’s the stuff of nightmares.

“There are benches round the corner you can sit on with a much nicer view, and you’re not in a dingy, dark environment.

“Whoever decided to plonk it there needs a serious talking to.”

Scarborough Borough Council was unable to comment on why the bench was initially erected in this particular spot.
