no scruples over socks with sandals

It would appear that the Romans may have committed a fashion faux pas that would have most people shuddering in the 21st century.

Evidence has been discovered during in North Yorkshire that members of Roman society wore socks with their sandals.

Rust on the nail from a Roman sandal appears to have impressions from fibres which could suggest that a sock-type garment was being worn.
