No tuition fee worries for lottery winner who intends to work too

There will be no debt worries for would-be student Wayne Hughes, who collected a cheque for £1.1m yesterday.

Mr Hughes, 34, from Holyhead, Anglesey, found out on Monday night that he was a winner in Saturday's draw after his mother checked his ticket and phoned him.

Mr Hughes raced to her house and "checked and double checked" his ticket on Teletext, he said. "It was so late so I hid the ticket in an old CD box until the morning when I called Camelot.

"I still can't believe I am a winner, it seems completely unreal."

As well as leaving his rented flat to buy a house, Mr Hughes, who is single and works at a Wilkinson's store, plans to buy gifts for family and friends.

He will buy a new car and plans to go to university to study IT.

"Having this money means I can go and study without any worries about where the cash will come from." he said.

"I will still keep working at Wilkinson's – even if I look to reduce my hours while I study.

"I really want to go on holiday and may just turn up at the airport to get the first flight out of the UK. I'll have to get my passport renewed first though as it has less than three months left before it runs out."
