Noise nuisance fine for motorsports organisers

ORGANISERS of motorsports events at a former air force base in Yorkshire have been fined after they were found guilty of causing noise nuisance.

Hundreds of residents have complained to City of York Council about motorsports and related activities at Elvington Airfield, near York, since the owners bought it over a decade ago.

Elvington Park Ltd, Elvington Events Ltd and John Christopher Hudson were found guilty of causing statutory noise nuisance on August 7 and October 16, last year in breach of a previously served noise abatement notice.

They were yesterday fined £3,500 each and were ordered to pay £14,500 in costs to the council following a three-day trial at Selby Magistrates’ Court.

The notice was served on the companies and Mr Hudson, who is the secretary and director for both companies, in October 2009.

The council said it was one of the most significant noise abatement cases it had dealt with.

Principal environmental protection officer Anthony Dean said the local authority welcomed the judgement. “We will continue to respond to noise complaints from local residents and monitor noise levels at events held at the airfield,” he added.
