North Yorkshire: Spa's reduced regeneration goes on

In Scarborough, more than £1m is at stake for the town's projects to regenerate The Spa and prepare for the redevelop-ment of the Futurist Theatre, although the money may go back into the pot next year.

Yorkshire Forward bosses cancelled this year's payments of 800,000 towards the Spa project, and 289,555 towards buying up leases to smooth the way for the redevelopment of the Futurist Theatre.

Chairman of the Futurist Task Group Coun David Jeffels said: "It is to be hoped that the funding for both these schemes is just deferred." But he was confident that the Spa scheme would continue, albeit in a scaled-down form.

York is facing an immediate 400,000 cut to its York Central scheme to transform one of Britain's largest brownfield sites. Yorkshire Forward is still putting in 100,000 towards the feasibility work and seconding two members of staff. Council Leader Andrew Waller said: "It's important people realise the project is up and running."
