North Yorkshire's fire crews called to seven grass fires in one night

FIREFIGHTERS IN North Yorkshire have been called to seven grass or woodland fires in just one night.

The first call came in at 5.20pm yesterday, when crews from Malton, Sherburn, Knaresborough and York were called to a stubble field on fire in Norton, near Malton.

A fire to a combine harvester had spread to a stubble field and straw on the ground.

Crews used five hose reels and beaters, with the fire service's all-terrain vehicle from Kirkbymoorside also brought in to help.

At about 6.40pm, firefighters from Summerbridge and Harrogate were called to a grass fire in the woods at Riggs Spring covering an area of nearly 400sq ft. The crews used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

Then, at 7.30pm, a crew from Scarborough was called to a large fire in the open at Foxholes, Driffield.

About 270sq ft of gorse and bracken was on fire and crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish it.

The fourth call was to Harwood Dale Forest at 7.40pm.

Crews from Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough were called to a report of smouldering in the woodland. The fire engine from Robin Hood’s bay arrived first and the firefighters found that the fire was already out. The crew damped down the area and the Scarborough team was told its help was not needed.

The fifth call came in just five minutes later. A crew from Knaresborough was called to a pile of grass on fire at First Avenue, Harrogate. The fire was already out when they arrived.

Shortly before 9pm, a crew from Acomb was called to a small grass fire in the open at Tennent Road, York. The fire measured more than 1,000sq ft and the crew used beaters to extinguish the fire.

Also at 9pm, a crew from Thirsk was called to a fire in the woods at Paradise Road, Boltby. This measured nearly 500sq ft and is believed to have been a camp fire that had been left unattended.
