The incident scene remains cordoned off as police enquiries continue.”

Visitors arriving in Scarborough yesterday on what was due to be the busiest day of the year so far with spring temperatures finally arriving found shops, amusement arcades and restaurants on the South Bay shut while forensic examinations were conducted at the scene.

Sam Anderson, a 28-year-old mother from Gateshead, said: “It’s a very bitter disappointment. We are just going to have to head back. We heard the incident happened in one of the public gardens so we were maybe expecting that bit to be closed or maybe half of the seafront, but not all of it.”

The South Bay Traders’ Association’s chairman, John Senior, confirmed business owners had closed for the day, but stressed their thoughts were with friends and relatives of the dead teenager.

He added: “The seafront businesses are owned mainly by families and Scarborough is a family resort. So we are all feeling pretty sick about what has been a terrible tragedy involving a young person.”
