Nursery gets new lease of life ready for coming generations

Staff at a North Yorkshire nursery, which has supported children with additional needs for over 25 years, are celebrating the completion of the first stage of a £30,000 renovation.

To mark the milestone, the founder of Peter Pan Nursery in Sherburn in Elmet, Gwan Sykes, unveiled a plaque in commemoration of her work at the charity, which also looks after children whose families are experiencing difficulties or are in need of respite and support. She established the nursery in 1985 with just 50p and three children – 26 years later it has almost 20 youngsters on the books, three qualified staff and a host of volunteers.

The refurbishment, funded through donations including more than £13,000 from the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, has seen new toilets installed along with an office and meeting room. More improvements are planned for the spring, including a new kitchen and bigger play area.

Jenny Moy, a volunteer for 20 years, said: “Over the years we have helped numerous families and this refurbishment will make a big improvement to the nursery as there will be lots more play space for the children.”

While unveiling the plaque, Mrs Sykes thanked the nursery’s supporters and spoke fondly about an original toy that is still used – a rocking horse, donated by Durham Police cadets.
