Nurses promote HPV vaccine

Sheffield’s HPV School Nursing Team are helping to promote vaccinations in schools by putting their own faces to the campaign.

Since September 2008 there has been a national programme to vaccinate Year eight girls against the human papilloma virus (HPV) a common cause of cervical cancer. Alison Campbell, from the School Nursing Team, said: ”It is important that girls aged 12 to 13 come to us for their HPV vaccinations as it protects them against two of the HPV strains that cause 60-70 per cent of all cases of cervical cancer. We also felt that it was important for the girls to see that we are friendly and approachable people who they can speak to easily and so they feel comfortable in coming to us with any worries or concerns.” Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women aged under 35, after breast cancer. www.nhs.uk/conditions/HPV-vaccination/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Sheffield Parkinson’s UK Branch has received support from a Council Small Grants Fund to run a six-week hydrotherapy / aquarobics class starting on March 24, and a six-week circuit class starting May 5.

People with Parkinson’s can use the buoyancy and warmth of the water to improve their fitness, or challenge themselves to an all-over body exercise programme in a gym with others.

Bhanu Ramaswamy, the physiotherapist who will be running the classes from the Full Monty Exercise Club says: ”Both classes are designed to provide a fun way to improve general flexibility and muscle strength whilst also building endurance alongside others who have Parkinson’s.

“We ran both courses last year, and it was amazing to see how people’s confidence to move improved over the weeks.”
