Oasis of peace in bustling city

As much of city centre in York bustled with shoppers rushing for last-minute gifts yesterday, there was peace and practice at York Minster where chorister Tom Dowdy prepared for this weekend's Christmas services.

The 12-year-old and fellow members of the York Minster choir will be singing at the 4pm Service of Nine Lessons and Carols today and at three services on Christmas Day – starting 10 am, 11.45 am and 4 pm.

The St William's Singers will sing at the Midnight Mass tonight.
