Garrick Graham

GARRICK Graham, who has died aged 77, was born, brought up and educated in New Zealand, but it was in Yorkshire where he made his home and his career.

From King's College, Auckland, he won a scholarship to Dunedin Medical School.

A competent all-rounder at cricket, he played for New Zealand Universities and his local team, and it was at a local match that he met a very special spectator in the person of Joy Bayly whom he would later marry.

He began his medical career at Auckland Public Hospital, eventually deciding to specialise in surgery.

In order to qualify as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, he brought his young family to England, and after intensive study, achieved his goal in May, 1963.

Following this, he held various registrar positions and also spent three months as a locum in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, working for Shell Oil Company.

In 1964 he joined the Professorial Surgical Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, working as Registrar to Professtor Goligher.

In November, 1967, he was appointed Consultant Surgeon at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and remained in that position for 25 years. During that time he devoted himself to the task of introducing clinical management into the organisation, encouraging managers and clinicians to work together to the benefit of patients. He held the top management role in the Huddersfield Hospital Trust for a number of years.

Mr Graham was an avid sports fan and an enthusiastic supporter of Huddersfield Town FC, becoming a director in the early 70s and chairman in the 1973/74 season.

Mr Graham is survived by his wife, Joy, their three children, Michael, Kathryn and Jacky and three grandchildren, Alexander, Tom and Imogen.
