Gordon Scrowston

GORDON Robert Scrowston, who successfully campaigned over many years for the professional body for legal executives to be granted a Royal Charter, has died aged 87, five months after it was achieved.

He was one of several members of the Institute of Legal Executives, of which he was president in 1986, who petitioned for the honour. It was approved by the Queen last October and they are now known as the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.

Mr Scrowston had been managing clerk at the Beverley solicitors’ practice of Paterson, Bateman and Hodgson for more than 30 years.

He was born at Elloughton, near Brough, but moved to Flamborough as a boy when his father Cyril became the local policeman.

He was educated at St George’s Boys’ Secondary School, Bridlington, and during the Second World War served in the Home Guard and also the Royal Observer Corps stationed at Flamborough.

Mr Scrowston, who was a very active, determined, patient and cheerful person, was heavily involved in village life serving on several committees and, in retirement, had been clerk to the parish council.

Sport, local amateur dramatics and jazz were his main interests and he was also a family minded man who loved children. He and his wife Jean celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last year.

In the years following the war he was a member of the original Flamborough Players, a concert party which put on shows to raise money for charity and which was so popular would tour local villages.

On the sporting side he had played for the village cricket team and followed the local football team, often helping out at their matches. He was also a keen supporter of Hull City football team following them at both home and away matches.

Golf was also a significant sporting interest and he was a member of Flamborough Head Golf Club for more than 50 years, being captain in 1974 and president from 1995 to 1998.

He was also a founder member of Flamborough and District Rabbit Golf Association in 1968 becoming the first secretary/ treasurer, a position he held for 25 years. He was elected president in 1975.

At a wider level, he was president of Yorkshire Rabbit Golf Association in 1979, captain of Scarborough and District Captains’ Association in 1992 and president of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs in 1996/97.

Mr Scrowston is survived by his wife, daughter Diane, son Martin, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His younger brother, Geoffrey, predeceased him two years ago.
