John Windass

JOHN WINDASS, who has died aged 69, was a club entertainer in Hull who went by the stage name John Daniels.

Outside those circles, however, his name is known to a wider public as the father of Dean Windass, the former Hull City footballer and striker.

John died in hospital of a heart attack shortly before he was due to sing at a 60th birthday party held at the Springhead Golf Course.

He was watching the FA Cup semi-final at home when he was suddenly taken ill.

John specialised in numbers made popular by Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, and in addition to his singing, his kind and helpful nature earned him a great many friends.

Brought up in the Hessle Road area of the port city, John loved music and loved to entertain.

Among the venues he regularly appeared at as John Daniels was The Lair in Anlaby Road, and he performed at many events for Stand, Hull’s fishing heritage organisation which is raising funds to create a fitting memorial for the estimated 8,000 Hull men who have been lost at sea.

John is survived by his wife Margaret and their son Dean.
