Ken Boyes

KEN Boyes, the former York City and Scarborough central defender, has died in Scarborough. He was 75.

Boyes played only 59 league and cup games for York as he was understudy to the legendary Barry Jackson, who was seldom injured in his record-breaking 538 appearances for the club between 1958 and 1970.

Boyes joined Scarborough as a 15-year-old in 1951 and moved to York in 1957. He earned a testimonial with York before re-joining Scarborough, his home town club, in 1966. A broken foot ended his playing career. He then switched to coaching and scouting.

He was coach when Scarborough won the FA Trophy in 1973 and was caretaker manager for a spell in 1974.
