Michael Wigglesworth

MICHAEL Wigglesworth, who has died aged 76, was chief instructor and experimental officer in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Leeds University for seven years until his retirement in 1997.

He gained his first qualifications at technical college in Bradford and Lincoln, and also served a five-year apprenticeship in the motor industry. He went on to work for a number of companies, including English Electric, the International Harvester Company and, lastly, the Universal Metallic Packing Company, where he was a technical manager. He was accorded Chartered Engineer status and Membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1968.

He joined Leeds University as an engineer/demonstrator in 1970. During the course of his career, he played a central role in the teaching of engineering design to undergraduates, and was invited to become the demonstrator responsible for the manufacturing laboratory. He took to this role with considerable relish and was key to the major enhancement of the laboratory facilities.

A pronounced feature of Mike's time at Leeds was his prominent involvement in the affairs of the local (North Midlands) branch and the Yorkshire Centre of the Automobile Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Mike is survived by daughter, Alison, and son, John.
