Rodney Jackson, solicitor and judge

Rodney Jackson, who has died at 82, was a solicitor and Recorder of the Crown Court who also served as leader of the Liberal group on Hull City Council.

Born in 1935, he attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar at Wakefield, and after National Service in Malaya, read law at Cambridge.

He became articled with Andrew M Jackson and Co in Hull in 1958, before being admitted as a solicitor in 1962. His expertise were recognised in 1985 when he was appointed a Recorder, an honour rarely bestowed upon solicitors at the time.

He became senior partner at Jacksons, now Andrew Jackson Solicitors LLP, in 1992 before retiring as a partner in 1994. He remained as a consultant and continued to sit as a Recorder until 2001, after which he became a consultant at Sandersons in Hull.

He is survived by Anne, his wife of 49 years, and sons Nicholas and Richard.
