It was the city in which he had been born in 1957. After considering a career in property and construction, he changed direction and joined the Midland Bank there in the late 1970s learning his trade and progressing through the ranks in local branch banking. While his heart remained in Sheffield, he was ambitious and took the opportunity to move to the TSB in Cambridge, where he developed a passion for business and enjoyed working with the emerging technology.

He also took up a new hobby when he bought a derelict barn in the Peak District, turning it over several years into a family home.

In 2002, he joined the Bank of Scotland’s corporate business in Yorkshire, with the remit to open an office in his home city and develop a presence there.

From a base of just six clients, he built an enviable range of contacts, and by 2006 his team also covered Doncaster, Hull and York. Five years later, he was promoted to lead the bank’s corporate business across Yorkshire and the North East, which he did until Lloyds acquired the Bank of Scotland in 2009.

After the takeover, he returned to Sheffield as area director for Lloyds’ corporate business, and continued to grow it across the region. He also joined the board of Creative Sheffield, the council’s economic development unit.

His cancer diagnosis came in 2014. Despite an initial prognosis of a limited life expectancy, he determined to prove the doctors wrong, and he underwent lengthy and challenging treatment while continuing to lead the Lloyds team in Sheffield.
