Objection on Tesco bid to sell alcohol

A Tesco application to sell alcohol from one of its seaside stores will be decided by councillors following an objection from North Yorkshire Police.

The supermarket is seeking a licence for off-sales from its store in Station Avenue, Filey, from 7am to 10pm daily, including Sundays.

Bosses have underlined that there is nothing in the plans that will pose any risk to children. But police say the company's application has not shown how this will be achieved.

The police want measures in place to ensure youngsters cannot slip bottles off shelves in blind spots for CCTV coverage. They also want to ensure staff are trained to spot underage drinkers and can operate the camera equipment.

Barry Lonsdale, Licensing Officer at Scarborough Town Hall, said it was all to do with how Tesco had presented its case.

The company had not provided sufficient information to the police on the child protection and crime prevention issues. While Tesco said policies were in place, they had not attached them to the application so they could not be assessed.

However, councillors should still be able to approve the application because the police had negotiated with Tesco and come up with a strategy to allay the concerns.

The main alcohol display will be monitored by CCTV and no alcohol will be displayed near to the store entrance unless monitored by CCTV.

According to the agreement, a staff member should always be free to use the CCTV equipment and provide police with a copy of recordings when requested.

The tills will also be programmed to remind staff to ask for proof of age from anyone who looks under 25.

Police are happy with Tesco's response and the application will be considered on August 6.
