Officer arrested over burns allegation

A POLICE custody detention officer has been arrested over an allegation that hot liquid was poured over a prisoner in South Yorkshire, leaving him needing hospital treatment for burns.

The worker has since been bailed by the South Yorkshire force and the Independent Police Complaints commission is now investigating the incident, which took place at Barnsley police station on Sunday May 30.

The 26-year-old Barnsley man, who had been arrested for a public order offence, was treated in hospital for burns and blisters to his groin.

The office has now been suspended, while the IPCC manages an investigation by South Yorkshire Police's professional standards department.

IPCC commissioner Nicholas Long said: "This is a very serious allegation and South Yorkshire Police has responded quickly and appropriately in arresting their member of staff.

"We will now provide independent oversight by managing the ongoing investigation."

South Yorkshire Police's deputy chief constable Bob Dyson said: "On assessing the allegation made, the force took the decision to refer this complaint to the IPCC.

"A full investigation is underway to determine the facts."
