Officers focus on fuel tank thefts

POLICE patrols are being stepped up to try to crack down on a spate of fuel thefts from vehicles in Doncaster.

Residents are being advised to “remain vigilant” as, over the last month, there have been 23 vehicles that have had their fuel caps forced open and petrol siphoned from their fuel tanks.

Extra patrols are now being conducted and police are asking that people report any suspicious activity or behaviour to the police.

Sergeant Jez Fitzgibbons said: “We believe these attacks on vehicles are targeted and that it is the same people committing the crimes.

“I would urge residents if possible, to park their vehicles in their garage if they have one, and if they have CCTV installed, to ensure it covers their vehicle.

“I would also advise people to be aware of where they park their vehicle at night, and try to only park in well-lit areas.”

Those with information on any of the thefts have been asked to contact either South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
