Officers go to bus station to prevent crime

A crime prevention drop-in is to open at Huddersfield Bus Station today.

Those behind the initiative hope the weekly event will help prevent people falling victim to thieves in the town centre.

Officers from the Huddersfield south neighbourhood policing team (NPT) will be in the travel centre between 10am and 2pm every Thursday to provide crime prevention advice.

A similar drop-in will open at the Packhorse Centre on August 26.

Police community support cfficer Steve Lowman has organised the events with Metro, the bus station, the Huddersfield retail crime partnership and the Packhorse Centre.

He said: "The aim of the events is to have a regular location available to the general public each week where they can meet with their local NPT officers in familiar surroundings to pick up crime prevention advice.

"The bus station and Packhorse Centre are places which many people go to on a daily basis, so we are also looking at being able to give these people the opportunity to speak to officers about any concerns or enquiries they may have."

Those dropping in can pick up free key chains, "secret" purses and home security packs.

Metro chairman Councillor Chris Greaves said: "Metro has invested millions in on-bus CCTV and police community support officers but people often forget about safety in the home or when out and about."
