Officers issue date-rape drug alert

North Yorkshire Police said the period often sees a rise in sex offences against women who may have had too much to drink or have had their drinks spiked.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick warned women that they can be more susceptible to sexual assaults if they drink too much and become unaware of their surroundings.

He said: "It is important for women to be careful about how much they are drinking on a night out. Be alert to who is around you and look out for your friends, especially if they have had too much to drink.

"Keep an eye on your drink and don't leave it unattended. Don't go home alone – make transport arrangements before you go out and don't leave anyone behind.

"Becoming the victim of a sexual assault is devastating. Be sensible and do everything possible to stay safe."

Police are warning people not to leave drinks unattended and are asking friends to look out for each other during drinking sessions.
