Officers' journeys included Berlin

A WEST Yorkshire local authority has been spending £1,000 a month on staff hotel stays as well as funding flights to destinations including Nice and Berlin.

Calderdale Council has spent 36,300 on hotel bills since 2007 including one-night stays of 460, 350 and 345 for its director of community services. Calderdale said these individual fees included the cost of attending the accompanying conferences.

It also spent 1,200 on flights to the south of France last year for two officers to attend the MIPIM property fair, and 1,000 on two flights to Berlin for training.

A spokeswoman said: "The council is particularly careful about how it spends money on travel and overnight accommodation. In the cases highlighted, the figures represented are the total cost of courses/events and overnight accommodation.

"The officers attending MIPIM were among representatives from five local authorities from the Leeds City Region promoting it as a location for business and investment. The council is still in talks with a number of potential investors as a result of attending. The visit to Berlin was part of a larger delegation funded by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber."
