Officers in Savile probe visit Australia

The force said officers travelled to Australia regarding Operation Yewtree, but would not discuss the matter further.

A number of high-profile figures from the entertainment industry have been arrested as part of the investigation, which is being run in three strands: allegations against Savile, allegations involving Savile and others, and allegations involving others.

Australian TV personality Rolf Harris has been named as one of those arrested.

The 83-year-old, who performed for the Queen at her Diamond Jubilee concert last year, was interviewed by detectives in November and then arrested on March 28 under the strand of the investigation termed “others”.

The entertainer was only identified online until last month when The Sun published his name, followed by other news outlets.

Harris is one of 12 people arrested under Operation Yewtree, along with former pop star Gary Glitter, DJ Dave Lee Travis and comedians Freddie Starr and Jim Davidson. All deny wrongdoing.

PR guru Max Clifford was charged last Friday with 11 historic counts of indecent assault against teenage girls.

The 70-year-old, who is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 28, has vowed to clear his name, labelling the allegations “a load of nonsense”.

Operation Yewtree was launched following the catalogue of allegations which emerged about Savile’s conduct following the disc jockey and charity worker’s death.
