Officers sign off on case of poison pen correspondence

POLICE investigating poison pen letters which plagued a family in a village in the Yorkshire Dales have closed the case.

But according to reports the family, who live in Stainforth, near Settle, are now receiving greetings cards – many of which contain "get well" messages.

The latest spate of mysterious mail, which is not thought to be

threatening, has not been reported to police.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The case has been closed as we can't progress it any further at this time. The letters were subject to forensic tests but no matches could be found. However if any new information is received then the case will be reopened."

The plight of the family emerged last October after the family at the centre of what appeared to be a hate-mail campaign had received about 20 threatening letters with postmarks from Leeds and London.

The disturbing letters continued and were sent away for forensic examination as North Yorkshire Police continued to investigate the baffling case.

On one occasion, the family, who moved to the picturesque village a few years ago, received six letters on one day and another six the following day.

The first batch to arrive at the family's home featured similar handwriting and A5-sized lined paper.

At one point samples were put on public display in Stainforth village hall where they were examined by about 20 people.

The notes were in a neat hand and the snippets of the letters on view were like two or three-line odes.

They included disturbing messages such as: "Wait for the pins," "Can you feel the pins yet? Won't be long, " and "pins, pins, & more pins."
