Oil exploration work approved

A CANADIAN-owned company has been given permission to begin exploratory drilling for oil between two East Riding villages.

Rathlin Energy (UK) Limited will drill vertical boreholes 1.5 miles into the ground at the site between Bishop Burton and Walkington after being granted planning permission by East Riding Council.

The project, which was opposed by some residents and Walkington Parish Council, allows for 24-hour drilling for a period of between five and 10 weeks, and will see a 160ft drilling rig installed.
