Olympic champion to visit city sports event

FORMER Olympic champion and current triple jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards will arrive in Hull next week to check on the city’s preparations of the 2012 Games in London.

Mr Edwards will visit the Come and Try It family sports events at East Park and Woodford Leisure Centre on Wednesday, take part in archery and basketball sessions, and watch a boxing display run by Hull’s St Paul’s Amateur Boxing Club.

Mr Edwards, who was Olympic triple jump champion at the Sydney 2000 Games, is visiting in his role as deputy chairman of the nations and regions group of the London Organising Committee.

His visit also follows the announcement that Hull will be one the city’s to host one of the London 2012 Torch relay legs and evening celebration events.

Hull Council’s portfolio holder for sport, Terry Geraghty, said: “It’s a great pleasure to be able to welcome Jonathan Edwards CBE to the city so he can shine a light on the wonderful sporting activities happening in the city, which will be showcased at the fantastic Come and Try It event at one of our leisure centres and the beautiful East Park. There is a huge amount going on in Hull for Jonathan to see and its fantastic to get to this level of recognition for Hull’s sports groups and residents to highlight their fantastic efforts for the city.”
