Olympic winners to take part in classic cycling weekend

THE CREAM of the country's cyclists will return to Beverley at the end of next week for one of the top events in the racing calendar.

Olympic gold medallists Ed Clancy and Steven Burke, who were part of the pursuit squad which took the top honours at Beijing, and a bevy of international riders will top the bill for the East Yorkshire Classic cycling extravaganza.

The weekend's events will kick off with Kingston Upon Hull Athletics Club's five-km running race which will set off from Saturday Market at 6pm on Friday July 16.

At 7.45pm the same evening 70 riders will race around the town for 70 minutes as part of the National Circuit Race cycling championships. The finish is at the Market Cross.

On Saturday 500 riders will choose between three scenic routes in the Yorkshire Wolds for the Big G touring ride.

The main event on Sunday will see 140 top racers line up in New Walk in Beverley at 10am to take part in the 98–mile East Yorkshire Classic. The event will once again be covered by Eurosport.

Michael Boyle, the event's media chief, said: "These events promoted by Hull Thursday Road Club become bigger and better every year, and with over 1,000 entries expected it is worth more than 250,000 to the local economy.
