One dead and two injured in road crashes

ONE man has died and two other people, including a 16-year-old girl, have been left with serious injuries after road accidents in Barnsley and Sheffield.

Police said the 23-year-old driver of a blue Vauxhall Tigra was killed when his car was involved in a head-on collision on Lee Lane, in Royston, Barnsley, around half a mile from its junction with Wakefield Road.

It is thought that the Tigra partially crossed into the opposite lane and hit a blue Volkswagen Beetle which was travelling in the opposite direction. Officers were called to the scene at around 7.15pm last Sunday.

A spokesman for South Yorkshrie Police said the male victim, who was from Wakefield, suffered fatal injuries, and his 16-year-old passenger, who is also from Wakefield, suffered severe head injuries and had been detained in Barnsley Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Beetle suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics and later taken to Barnsley Hospital as a precaution.

Police yesterday said they were also investigating a second incident, which happened at around 4.50pm on Monday evening and left a pensioner in hospital.

The accident involved a 77-year-old woman who was hit by a car in a suburb of Sheffield, suffering a fractured hip and head injuries.

Officers said the victim, who was yesterday being treated in the Northern General Hospital, was walking along Gleadless Road, in Gleadless, Sheffield, when she was hit by a blue Nissan Primera, being driven by a 72-year-old man from Chesterfield.

It is believed that collision happened after the Nissan had travelled through the junction of Gleadless Road and Blackstock Road, and was heading towards Mosborough. Officers said they thought the victim had walked out into the carriageway.

Anyone who witnessed either accident, or who who saw either vehicle in the minutes before the collisions, is asked to call the South Yorkshire Police accident witness helpline on 0114 220 2970.
