Open day event
to ease tension hailed a success

An event to combat reported tensions in Sheffield suburbs has been deemed a success by organisers, with more than 620 people attending.

The Pakistan Muslim Centre’s community open day on Woodbourn Road was organised for EU migrants in an attempt to build a better bond between local groups. Project manager, Mukhtar Tufail, said he hoped the event will “go a long way towards building bridges, enhancing and bolstering community cohesion”.

It featured live performances from members of different communities, activities for children and speeches from local dignitaries.

Previously former Home Secretary David Blunkett has raised fears about tensions between local people and Roma migrants in Sheffield unless action is taken to improve integration.
