Open design of new market hall under fire

THE design of a wooden medieval style market hall in a Pennine town has been criticised because it is open to the weather.

Penistone Town Council has been told that market traders who will soon be using the new hall which has been built by Barnsley Council have said they will be placing plastic sheets around their stalls to protect them from wind and rain.

Mayor of Penistone, Coun Mrs Carol Bradbury, said: "It is a lovely building and must have cost at least a million pounds but we expected it to be covered in.

"Penistone gets a lot of wind with being in the Pennines and the market traders have complained that it will be very draughty without any side covering and it will be an eyesore if they start placing plastic sheets round their stalls in such a nice building."

"We had expected the sides of the hall would be covered with something like glass, plastic or continental style shutters."

Coun Steve Webber, also a member of Barnsley Council, said he thought there were were plans for some kind of side covering and he would raise the issue.
