Opening for refurbished library and child centre

THE refurbished Northowram Library and the new Northowram and Shelf Children's Centre will open its doors to the public tomorrow at 3pm.

And an hour later, to mark the occasion, the Mayor of Calderdale, Coun Ann McAllister, will conduct the official opening ceremony.

This is a public event and the council says everyone is welcome to attend, including residents and members of the business community.

Northowram library closed in March for the construction of the new children's centre for the communities of Northowram and Shelf

During this period the library was refurbished to include a new children's area in the library, new shelving and improved access.

Libraries and the council's Children and Young People's Services have been working closely to develop the new combined site, providing a useful and versatile venue for families in the area.

The two services will be able to operate independently when necessary and there are already plans to hold joint sessions so that families can make best use of the whole premises.

The new centre follows a trend that has seen libraries actively combining with partners in the council and the voluntary sector to provide convenient and complementary services to local people.

Coun David O'Neill, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: "The new library and children's centre will provide a wonderful space for people to mix, play and learn. By offering both services in one centre it will be a real asset to families in the area."

It is a good time for Calderdale residents who enjoy visiting libraries. On Monday, August 23, the new King Cross library development will be opening its doors to the public.

Built with funding from the BIG Lottery Community Libraries Fund and Calderdale Council, the library – which replaces the old one at King Cross – has been designed to maximise natural light, with extensive windows to two sides.
